New social enterprise Pentland Energy Advice (PEA) successfully created as result of an innovative community project acquistion by Pentland Housing Association (PHA). This demonstrates the viability of integrating mergers and acquisitions into new social business development models
PEA was assisted by Big Lottery funded 'Acquiring Business 4 Good' programme to enable smooth transaction through access to expert advice on the acquistion process
Successful completion of acquisition has meant increased employment opportunity for long term unemployed and increased social impact through enabling energy advice project delivery to be kept within community
We are delighted to announce the launch of Pentland Energy Advice. As fuel costs continue to rise it is without doubt a project that will help reduce energy costs for both domestic and commercial sectors.
David Brookfield (CEO, Pentland Housing Association)
Housing associations are just one of a growing group of social enterprises considering this form of growth and working with Acquiring Business 4 Good to achieve it. Charities, Development Trusts, Social Firms and community businesses are also investigating this option of increasing income and social impact.
Karen Anderson (Business Acquisition Co-ordinator, Social Firms Scotland)
- The Acquiring Business 4 Good (AB4G) programme ran from January 2009 to December 2012 and worked across the Third Sector delivering mergers and acquisition support. AB4G was a pioneering pilot project developed by Social Firms Scotland and funded through the Big Lottery’s Dynamic and Inclusive Communities fund. One of the key areas of support was to assist social enterprises and charities to acquire profitable private businesses. We also supported organisations looking to work together, develop partnerships or merge, either within the Third Sector or cross sector. Social Firms Scotland is the national support agency promoting and supporting the development of Social Firms. Social Firms are a distinct type of social enterprise. A business with a social purpose; Social Firms are distinct as they create employment, training, work experience and volunteering opportunities for people who find it hard to access work.
