National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel hosted a town hall meeting with Tampa-area educators at the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association Community Center. He discussed the upcoming reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) – the current version is known as the No Child Left Behind Act. He also addressed Race to the Top, the Gates Foundation grant to Hillsborough County, education funding, and recruiting and retaining quality educators.

In addition to getting school staff energized about the upcoming school year, Van Roekel highlighted public school innovation, partnerships, and teacher- and union-led school transformation efforts. He was joined locally by Colorado Education Association (CEA) President Beverly Ingle and Denver Classroom Teachers Association President (DCTA) Henry Roman.
Diane Ravitch receives NEA’s Friend of Education Award

Sarah Brown Wessling, the 2010 National Teacher of the Year, fired up the 9,000 educators attending the National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly today with a passionate speech that emphasized her belief that teachers must be the lead learners in their own classrooms. That means teachers who are listening, interacting, and working side by side with their students, she said.

Kentucky school bus driver wows 9,000 colleagues

At a gathering of 9,000 educators on the nation’s birthday, the fireworks came courtesy of a school bus driver from Kentucky.
In a lively and emotional speech to delegates at the National Education Association’s Representative Assembly (RA) here in New Orleans, Helen Cottongim—NEA’s Education Support Professional of the Year for 2010— insisted that the challenges facing public education are no match for the commitment and caring of the nation’s teachers and other school employees.
