Over the years, there’s been a lot of talk about how and why the popular ancient ruin on Earth was built. As such, many speculations have risen about the creation of such beautiful, well-defined stone structures. Was it for an observatory? Was it a place of worship for the people of Stone Age? Was it used as a calendar? Was it built by aliens?
Many have said that the Stonehenge was brought by the Wizard Merlin from Ireland, while others believe that it served as a druicidal temple for the ancient Egyptians. These theories presented without any solid proof or answers have fuelled the curiosity of many tourists and scientists alike.
The term Stonehenge came from the Saxon’s terminology of “Stanhenge,” which means, “to hang.” Now, won’t that name give a little extra to Stonehenge’s mystery?
While a lot of archaeologists have tried to deduce why the great stone structure was created, still many have failed to understand its purpose. Many studies and researches have been done, but the results still point to the same reason; it’s like you’re blindly chasing a rat at a dark room. The fact that there was no form of documentation makes it even harder to comprehend.
Today, another group of researchers from Britain come forward and announce that they have the answer to the ultimate riddle of the Stonehenge. The team was made up of scientists from five universities in Britain. It was said that it’s the biggest archaeological research ever done in the notable edifice.
With the team’s strategy of putting the Stonehenge into perspective and learning the culture that created it, they have come up with a conclusion that the monument symbolizes the unity of Stone Age in Britain, which for many centuries had been pulled apart by the East-West rivalry. The circle where the stones were formed is supposed to represent the peace between the tribes.
The place where the Stonehenge was erected, the researchers believe, was a pre-ordained spot because it’s perfectly located where an axis is formed between the directions of the summer and winter solstice. The Stone Age people must have believed that the midsummer/midwinter site was the center of the world.
Great effort and teamwork that were exerted to move the massive stone structures from west Wales was believed that it must have been the tribes’ way of presenting peace and unity between their clans.
It may seem today that the great enigma behind the Stonehenge has already been solved. However, the magic that the stone structures hold will always have some fascinating effect towards its visitors.
