Build an app to reach 35m professionals at Viadeo 24 hour hackday

September 30, 2011: Professional social network Viadeo is challenging developers, designers and start-ups to ‘come-up with something special’ at its first official hackday in London today and win the top prize of an all-expenses paid trip to Europe’s foremost technology conference, Le Web 2011.

The hackday will gather top tech and business talent from around the country to create innovative social applications using APIs from Viadeo and its partners. It is free to attend and Viadeo will provide pizza, beer and beanbags for the duration of the 24 hour hack which begins at 18.30 today at Innovation Warehouse.

Down to business

Ideas for apps and services will be pitched to the room at the beginning of the hack and teams will be formed around an area of interest and specific skill sets.

Each team will then have access to exclusive mentoring from Viadeo and its partners.

The event will culminate with final presentations of the apps that have been created and the announcement of the winning teams. The top prize is an all-expenses paid trip to Europe’s foremost technology conference, Le Web 2011.

APIs driving innovation

“The Viadeo Hackday exemplifies what the network is all about – making connections and driving innovation,” said Wayne Gibbins, Communications Director of Viadeo. “Earlier this year we launched our public API with the intention of helping developers integrate with social platforms, connect with businesses and reach a wider audience. Now people will have the chance to experiment with the API surrounded and spurred on by other developers. We hope that the apps and businesses created during these 24 hours will long outlive our first hackday.”

The London-based hack day follows hot on the heels of the global API developer contest announced by Viadeo earlier this month. Developers from around the world are currently working on apps to compete for prizes worth a total of $20,000. The contest is being judged by an esteemed panel of experts including technology blogger Robert Scoble and venture capitalist Richard Ling.
