This event is a great opportunity for public relations and communications specialists to meet the award-winning journalists who shape education news coverage.
Delegates can pitch their ideas face-to-face at this informal evening, and hear them talk about what they’re looking for, how best to approach them - and what they hate the most from PRs.
The evening starts with a panel session on what makes a good pitch, followed by a 'speed meet' - eight to 10 minutes with each journalist for each small group of delegates.
Journalists confirmed to attend many of those honoured at the Education Journalism awards, which are run by the CIPR Education & Skills group. They include: Phil Baty of Times Higher Education (THE), winner of the 2010 Ted Wragg award for sustained contribution to education journalism; Sean Coughlan of the BBC website (winner, 2011 national award); and Marc Ashdown (BBC London, winner of the 2011 regional award).
The event takes place on Thursday 2 February. Registration is at 6pm, the event runs from 6.30pm to 8pm, followed by drinks and networking to 9.30pm.
Venue: Russell Room, Chartered Institute of Public Relations, 52-53 Russell Square, London WC1B 4HP (nearest tube: Russell Square)
The event costs £50 for members of the CIPR or its Education & Skills group, £65 for members of HERA, CASE, Universities UK or the AoC, and £85 for others (plus VAT).
"I'm going there to answer any questions on how we work and to talk about what stories we tend to cover and how best to get in touch with us."
Sean Coughlan of the BBC News website
"Supporting the professional development of those working in education PR is one of our main objectives . Media relations remains a key element of PR practice and the insights shared by such an esteemed group of education journalists will be invaluable for both new entrants and seasoned practitioners.”
Louise Jaggs, Co-Chair of the CIPR Education and Skills Group
The CIPR Education and Skills Group is one of a number of regional, national and sectoral CIPR groups, each run on a voluntary basis by a committee made up of CIPR members. Established in June 2003, the Group’s objective is to provide mutually constructive support to members operating in the education and skills sector. The Group aims to emphasise the professional role and credibility of PR professionals in the education and skills sector by providing a forum for serious debate and sharing of knowledge and experience. It is the only professional network to reflect the needs of the whole education sector, incorporating, schools, colleges, further and higher education institutions and professional development needs.
