More Information

Whether it’s turning their basement into a home bar, restoring an antique or a family heirloom, or creating a backyard oasis, more and more people across the country are devoting their time, efforts and passion to working on personal projects that stand the test of time. Grant’s has teamed up with Champley to offer advice to homeowners and DIY enthusiasts about the best ways to approach their projects so that the results live on in the home and live on as conversation pieces.

“Home DIY projects shouldn’t just be about getting the job done, they should also be about getting the job done so that it endures,” says Champley.  “Just like a good Whisky, home DIY projects should be approached with care and attention to detail, inspire future generations, and serve as great experiences that yield a wealth of stories to share with friends and family.  With the Grant’s Real DIY contest, we want to encourage people to share stories about their projects so that we can help them bring their next project to life.”

Karl Champley’s Tips for Creating Home DIY Projects that Last the Test of Time:

  • Build it to Last: Whatever your project may be, build it to stand the test of time. You want to construct it right, the first time, without having to go back and refinish, fix and modify.  After all, what’s the point of a project if it doesn’t last long enough to enjoy?
  • Take your Time: A good craftsman takes his time with any project. The more time you take to plan out a project, the quicker it will be completed and the fewer mistakes you will make.  Also, the more time you invest into preparation, patience and practice, the better and longer-lasting your end product will be.
  • Plan: No matter how large or small your project may be, always create and draw up a detailed plan.  This will help you visualize your project and assist you in ordering all of the correct materials. Draw up a material list and order everything (one time) in bulk. This will save you in material costs, delivery charges, and time spent going to and from the hardware store a dozen times!
  • Set Up: Another important point: do you have a work station?  In my world, this is the only way to go to achieve efficiency, safety and prevent a sore back. Remember it takes less than 15 minutes to set one up – just use a couple of saw stools and planks or a sheet of plywood for a work surface. Once set up, have your safety goggles and ear protection nearby so you always know where they are. This kind of preparation will save you a lot of time in the long run. It’s worth it!
  • Invest in the Future: Always invest in good quality tools. Yes, they cost more but can last you a lifetime. This will save you money in the long term and prove that, in the same way that a bad workman blames his tools, a good workman can thank his!
  • Have Fun: Rather than locking yourself away while you sweat over your project, try to make it an event for friends and family. That way, you will be able to lighten your load, make the process more enjoyable and share the stories of your project for years to come!  Collaboration will mean that the process alone will be a life-long experience for all.
  • Own it: Whatever your project is, enjoy doing it, and be proud of it, as it is your own personal creation for everyone to see. Once you’ve stared it, you will wonder why you waited all this time.  And once you’ve finished it, remember to take great delight in sitting back and admiring your handiwork, and sharing stories of how your project came to be!

“As a five generation family-owned company, Grant’s knows the importance of having a place to relax with friends and family” said David Bitran, Senior Brand Manager for Grant’s Whisky.  “We want to acknowledge and commend those guys who are dedicated to trying a different angle in their home entertaining, by helping them to create a home bar for entertaining friends and family.”
