House of Commons, London, Thursday 8 December 2011: 120 journalists, PR professionals and senior representatives from the education and skills sector gathered at the House of Commons for the seventh Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Education Journalism awards. The awards celebrated the best education and skills reporting of the academic year 2010-11.
The event was organised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Education and Skills Group, a professional network of over 300 PR and communications professionals working across the UK education and skills sector.
The awards, with prizes of £500 for the winners and £150 for the runners up, are as follows:
The Ted Wragg Award for sustained contribution to education journalism. Winner: John O'Leary. The award was sponsored by the University of Nottingham and presented by its Director of Communications and Marketing, Emma Leech. Nominations are made by the membership of the CIPR Education and Skills Group.
The award for outstanding education reporting for national journalists. Winner: Sean Coughlan of the BBC News Website. Runners-up were Helen Ward and Adi Bloom, both of the TES. The award was sponsored by the Institute of Education London University and presented by its Dean, Prof Richard Andrews.
The award for outstanding educational reporting for regional and local journalists. Winner: Marc Ashdown of BBC London Television News. Runner-up: Christine Alsford of ITV Meridian. The award was sponsored by the University of West London and presented by its Director of Marketing, Communications and Recruitment, Mark Garratt.
The award for best online education commentary. Winner: Mike Baker. Runner-up: Sarah Cunnane of Times Higher Education. The award, held for the first time this year, was sponsored by Electric Paper, a full service provider in software, hardware and consulting services, and presented by its Managing Director Eric Bohms.
The Awards evening was held in the Members' Dining Room of the House of Commons. The event was hosted by the co-chairs of the CIPR Education and Skills Group, Louise Jaggs and Nicola Miller. The principal sponsor of the awards was Communications Management, a communications consultancy which specialises in working with organisations who have education at the heart of their work.
Keynote speaker was Graham Stuart MP, chair of the Commons select committee on education, who also kindly arranged the use of parliamentary facilities.

The CIPR Education and Skills Group is one of a number of regional, national and sectoral CIPR groups, each run on a voluntary basis by a committee made up of CIPR members. Established in June 2003, the Group’s objective is to provide mutually constructive support to members operating in the education and skills sector. The Group aims to emphasise the professional role and credibility of PR professionals in the education and skills sector by providing a forum for serious debate and sharing of knowledge and experience. It is the only professional network to reflect the needs of the whole education sector, incorporating, schools, colleges, further and higher education institutions and professional development needs.
