When Mick Brady and son, Rich, planned their latest DAS Resilience challenge they knew the forecast looked grim. What they hadn’t foreseen was being blown down the mountainside and nearly loosing their gear and Rich’s dog…
Every month Denbigh Army Surplus set their Facebook and Twitter a challenge. The first of them to successfully get to a secret location and recite the words "Strong.. Tough... Resilient" wins a whole host of outdoor prizes.
December's prize was made extra special with donations from Vango, Outdoor Enthusiast Mag and Original Outdoors.
This month's location was the summit of Snowdon and 3 brave souls left their cars at Pen-Y-Pass car park and headed up into the cloud covered mountain.
Depsite confident claims from one participan " see you at 9.05", a mere 5 minutes after the location was due to be published, it was gone 11 o'clock by the time the tired trio arrived to claim victory.
At 4pm the Bradys collected their gear and headed down the path, back to their car in Llanberis. It was around this time that the wind picked up and the 55 mph winds, that had been forecast, battered Mick, Rich and Molly, the 14 month old spaniel.
Mick was the first to be blown off his feet; weakened by illness and fatigue Rich could see is Dad wasn't doing to well and they elected to swap rucsacs. Something that Mick had been reluctant to do before leaving the summit.
During the gear exchange talking was almost impossible; the gales stole their voices and sent them spiraling over the mountains edge which created a moment of panic as Rich saw his own rucsac disapear down the mountain side.
As he struggled with his new load, Mick crept down the path to the missing sack and they headed for refuge by the top railway bridge.
I could see Dad was tired before we'd even left the summit, but he wouldn't give me the larger rucsac. It acted like a sail as we descended and the wind easily knocked him to the ground on several occasions.
I was still feeling quite strong on the decent, but when we swapped packs I was also blown over on to my front... I must have gone 4 or 5 metres sliding on my hands and knees.

I've been mountaineering in Snowdonia for nearly 40 years and have only ever experienced conditions like that on two similar occasions.
It was impossible to walk off the mountain safely and typically happened to Rich and I at the end of a 14 hour day.
The moral is to pay particular attention to wind speed forecasts, it's easy to slip into a false sense of security, thinking the odd 55mph gust is no problem.

It's one of those times that we can laugh at now we're back. We were being blown from behind and an awkward landing could have resulted in a broken jaw or wrist, which would have created a very different conclusion to the day.
We thought getting to the railway bridge would allow us some respite, but it was funnelling all that wind making it impossible to pass through until a slight lull. Molly was blown sideways and I had to practically run through hugging the walls.
Rich Brady | Denbigh Army Surplus
Denbigh Army Surplus is a family run business that operates out of it's warehouse in Denbigh, North Wales.
We sell Army Surplus to members of the Armed Forces, TA and general public a like. The durability of the clothing and equipment we sell lends itself to the farming and building industries and we often get members of the motorbike and bushcraft fraternity in too.
We've been on the industrial estate for nearly 25 years and we intend to stay here for many more...
