Information Systems: A Manager's Guide to Harnessing Technologyby John Gallaugher, associate professor of information systems at Boston College, and Sociology: Understanding and Changing the Social World bySteven E. Barkan, professor of sociology at the University of Maine, are among the 12 college textbooks awarded a Texty this year.

The annual competition recognizes excellence in current textbooks and learning materials. Judges are published textbook authors. Last year, Flat World authors Talya Bauer and Berrin Erdogan won a 2011 Texty for Organizational Behavior---the first time an openly-licensed textbook was given the award.

“TAA congratulates Flat World Knowledge on winning three Texty awards in the past two years,” said Richard Hull, TAA’s executive director. “This accomplishment speaks to the high quality of Flat World’s products and authors and is a positive affirmation of their open business model.”

“We’re extremely proud of John and Steve for being recognized by their peers with this prestigious award,” said Jeff Shelstad, CEO and co-founder of Flat World Knowledge. “They are not only passionate about their discipline, but also passionate about solving the textbook affordability issue by making their works available without restrictive price and access barriers.  And both books are being used by hundreds of faculty and thousands of students, so their impact has been immediate and real.”

Flat World Knowledge publishes its authors’ works under a Creative Commons license, which allows students to access the content online for free or buy low-cost digital or print formats. Instructors can easily tailor Flat World content to more perfectly fit their individual course using the publisher’s unique MIYO  (Make It Your Own) online editing platform.

The Texty Award, created in 1992, recognizes current textbooks and learning materials. For a full list of winners, visit http://www.taaonline.net/awards/2012winners.html.

The awards will be presented during an awards luncheon at the Text and Academic Authors Association’s 25th Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA on June 8-9, 2012. The awards luncheon will be held on Saturday, June 9. http://www.taaonline.net/2012TAAConference.
