In January, Flat World Knowledge announced a $15 million Series B funding round

led by Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments (BDMI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bertelsmann AG and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Flat World was named, along with Apple, Bloomberg, Facebook, and Google, as one of the top "30 to Watch" in 2011, by Outsell, Inc, a research and advisory firm focused on the publishing and information industries.

Prior to creating Flat World Knowledge in 2007, Shelstad served as Vice President and Editorial Director at Pearson Education and Publisher at McGraw-Hill. He has personally acquired some of the most successful business textbook authors in print today.
