Flat World Knowledge Named to “2011 Hottest New York City Companies” List

IRVINGTON, NY – February 16, 2011 – Flat World Knowledge, Inc., the largest publisher of free and open college textbooks for students worldwide, has been named one of the “2011 Hottest New York City Companies,” by business research firm Lead411.

More Information

Flat World joins Etsy, Tumblr, bit.ly and Foursquare on this year’s list of the fastest-growing technology and media companies in the New York City metropolitan area. The 2011 list began with over 2000 companies and was narrowed down to the top 67, according to Lead411.

To be selected, companies must be privately held and have revenue growth of 150 percent over the past two years or have raised more than $9 million in funding.

In January, Flat World Knowledge announced a $15 million Series B funding round led by Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments (BDMI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bertelsmann AG and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Flat World is a commercial pioneer within the growing open content movement to make educational materials freely available online. The company’s year-over-year growth is a result of its open textbook model. Students can read professionally-developed textbooks in their entirety online for free, or buy affordable print books, e-books for devices like the iPad and Kindle, audio books, PDF downloads and interactive study aids. All formats are sold at a fraction of the cost of conventional textbooks.

Professors are free to reorder and edit content, and add new material and interactive media to create the “perfect book” for their course. To date, Flat World texts have been used more than 1,600 educators and 100,000 students at over 900 colleges, ranging from Cornell University to Columbus State Community College to the California State University system.
