Eric Frank, president and co-founder of Flat World Knowledge, the largest commercial publisher of open college textbooks, will discuss how new business models can help break the cost spiral of higher education, at the Wunderlich Securities and Signal Hill Education Conference , on Thursday, November 17, at the Taj Hotel, in Boston.
Frank will speak on a panel titled "The Elephant in the Room: Addressing the Cost Crisis in Higher Education," at the one-day conference focused on the global private education market. Participants will hear from chief-level executives on how privately funded education businesses are addressing the global challenges of K-12, postsecondary and corporate education.
Joining Frank on the panel will be Dr. Wallace Boston, CEO, American Public Education (APEI); Burck Smith, CEO, StraighterLine; and moderator Peter J. Stokes, Executive Vice President and Chief Research Officer, Eduventures.
Flat World Knowledge is widely cited as a transformative leader in higher education publishing and a pioneer within the open education resources (OER) movement. The company has raised more than $30 million in funding from top investment firms and publishers, including Bessemer Venture Partners; Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments (BDMI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bertelsmann AG; and Random House, Inc.
The company's year-over-year growth is a result of its disruptive business model, which dramatically lowers costs for students and expands access to course materials in all formats, on any device. Instructors are free to tailor Flat World content to fit their syllabi and learning objectives with the MIYO (Make It Your Own) online editing platform.
Prior to launching Flat World in 2007, Frank held senior management positions at Thomson (now Cengage Learning) and Prentice Hall, a division of Pearson Education.
