Interactive 3D schools software released

LEVROS is a software package which allows users to explore leading edge schools and get close to the latest thinking in innovative learning space design.

LEVROS was developed in partnership with some of the world’s most innovative learning space designers including Dr Kenn Fisher, The Institute of Education, Birmingham Local Education Partnership and Woods Bagot Architects.

More Information

Explore best practice in learning design

Users can explore five leading edge schools from around the world including the Australian School for Science and Maths and the Birmingham concept school. Users choose an avatar from child and adult options, before setting off to get up close the latest learning spaces.

As well as getting close to best practice in learning design, LEVROS includes a series of workshops which were developed with the Institute of Education. While literature concerning the design of learning spaces is readily available, these workshops are a practical way for teachers and students to explore some of the issues around designing an effective learning space.

By exploring the latest schools and learning some valuable principles, teachers and students are engaged and empowered to make changes to their own learning spaces. Adult and child avatars are available, allowing students and teachers to explore designs from different perspectives. Perhaps the most powerful example of this is the wheelchair option, which allows users to explore school designs in a wheelchair, opening their eyes to barriers they might have never even noticed.

Engage stakeholders with the school design process

By allowing users to explore the latest learning spaces and delivering training around learning space design, LEVROS is a powerful resource for those who want to engage anyone in the school design process.

“It is an imaginative approach to engaging all those involved in school building designs” says Professor Nick Peacey of the Institute of Education. “The concept of playing with designs is engaging for young people and an excellent way of getting their feedback.”

LEVROS isn’t just useful for engaging students, it’s an innovative way to get all stakeholders interested. The menu systems and controls have been carefully designed to be easy to use by all ages and skill ranges, allowing all users to quickly find themselves immersed in a photo real 3D environment.

This combination of powerful technology, ease of use and a showcase of leading edge educational thinking makes LEVROS a highly engaging software package for those looking to explore the design of learning spaces.

Add your school design to LEVROS

The LEVROS package includes an option to have your school designs built into the software, featuring the same powerful technology used to showcase the world’s most innovative schools.

An important part of designing any school is engaging the users of the building in the design process. This is no easy task as there’s a huge amount of information to convey and architectural blue prints don’t always leap from the page into the imagination of the audience.

While images and realistic video fly-throughs go some way in helping to build a better picture, neither of these options allow the user to take control. The high quality 3D scenes in LEVROS give the user freedom to walk the corridors of virtual buildings and explore the layout. Rather than passively absorbing the design without interaction, the audience actively explores a 3D scene from the point of view of an avatar.

Further options include adding video screens to the 3D design and making the demo available online. Videos can be used to provide an introduction to the design or to highlight key features, while online availability brings the 3D design to a wide audience.

“LEVROS has the potential to engage 21st century learners” says Dr Kenn Fisher, Director of Learning at international architecture firm, Woods Bagot. With online options, mass engagement with the design process is suddenly easily achievable.

Once you’ve got your audience to your school design, you need to know their feedback and LEVROS has the perfect feature. A comments function allows users to make notes as they’re exploring each 3D scene and these can be saved and reviewed at the end of each session.

Quotes

“The idea of mixing CAD design with games technology is very exciting. It is an imaginative approach to engaging all those involved in school building designs. Everyone can share the experience and play with the best school models locally, nationally and internationally. It allows them to bring these ideas into the designs of their own. The concept of playing with designs is engaging for young people and an excellent way of getting their feedback.”

Professor Nick Peacey of the Institute of Education

“LEVROS has the potential to engage 21st century learners through its multi-media virtual-physical capabilities which match students’ rapidly emerging socially networked realities. LEVROS can map the virtual with the physical, as students do in their relationships and increasingly in their learning. It remains to be seen how rapidly these emerging technologies are taken up in the classrooms of the future.”
