Today Spotted by Locals, a network of blogs by locals in 22 cities in Europe, announced the launch of a mobile augmented reality application for city travelers. The application was developed by d-Media, and built on the Layar platform.
City travelers can now read all of Spotted by Locals' 3000 tips by locals in 22 cities on their mobile phones, locate the spots nearest to them, and let their mobile guide them towards these spots. Layar augmented reality adds the feature for visitors to point their camera-phone at a street, and see all Spotted by Locals tips around through the lens of their mobile phone. Pointing a camera-phone at a bar, restaurant or other type of spot, displays more information about it on the screen.
At this moment, the Layar augmented reality application is only available on the latest iPhone 3gs, and Android phones. Spotted by Locals visitors with other Internet-enabled mobiles phones can access all tips via its "regular" mobile websites. On these custom-made mobile cityblogs, visitors can search for spots in a specific category (like bars, restaurants, art & culture, shopping and places to relax) or spots within a specific neighborhood. Google Maps are provided with every article, and work seamlessly with GPS-enabled phones.
We're proud to announce we launched one of the first multi-national augmented reality applications for travelers in the world!
