Tips For Feeding Cereals To Babies

In the UK we all love our breakfast cereals. It just seems such a convenient way of having a healthy breakfast.  Of course not all cereals are completely healthy, there are many laden with sugar content so one has to be careful. However when babies turn 6 months, they can be fed solids and certain cereals like porridge can be quite easy for them to swallow too. Cereals like Weetabix that are quite mushy too can be fed to babies.

More Information

Many mothers do get confused with what brand they should use, but really it’s the ingredients that count. Although some grain and cereal options might not be suitable for a baby they will certainly be b suitable for a toddler. Such as granola and muesli, these would not be easy for the baby to swallow so stick to more mushy consistencies, like oats and other wheat based biscuits that can be dissolved with milk. Babies have to be weaned into solids and starting with the easiest options like rice is better as well for example. Rice also makes a good breakfast food too.

Many ask what the correct age should be when baby can be fed solids or cereals, there is no one answer. This will vary from baby to baby and it will be mother who will decide when the baby is ready. Usually the most babies are weaned into solids after 5-6 months. Cerelac and husks are popular choices for many mothers as they start their baby on solids. There are many ready made options and baby foods available these days. However experts say it’s always a better idea to make fresh food for your baby. Pureed rice, or boiled and stewed vegetables, fruits and lentils don’t take such a long time to make, but will make sure that your baby is getting all the vital nutrients that are needed for good health on a young child.

Soups are also a good option although perhaps more as a meal for lunch or dinner. Grains like quinoa, wild rice and basmati rice are versatile and can be blended, pureed and mushed into a paste with which you can add some mild seasoning to flavour it. In fact you can even steam the rice with vegetables and create a blend of foods for young babies to start off on.

These days there are plenty of baby bars, such as husk cereal bars and biscuits that can be quite helpful when they are teething as well. As babies get older you can then find healthy cereals and muesli bars that are suitable for toddlers and young children. Breakfast is a very important meal and make yours as healthy as possible with wholesome and nutritious foods to start your day with
