About Little Beauty

After an arduous journey all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand, Little Beauty launched in the UK in June 2009, and over the past four months the fiercely proud Kiwi brand has been making friends with wine lovers across the UK.

Named after the common Kiwi phrase “Little Beauty”, which is term of endearment, the brand’s classically styled wines are grown in Marlborough, New Zealand, at a very intimate and unique site in the Waihopai Valley. As part of the Southern Valleys, Waihopai has a slightly higher growing degree day count than the remainder of the Wairau Plain. This region enjoys a maritime climate of cool summer nights and long autumns that is ideal for Vine Physiology. Although quite youthful (planted 2002), the vineyard has a proven heritage and takes full advantage of the soils typical of the area that are a combination of light stony silt loams with fine sandy loam top soils and alluvial gravels. The upper terraces have greater depth of topsoil, where dark grey friable silt loams over blocky silt giving Little Beauty its noted and unique flavours that are specific to the site.
Vineyard layout is true north/south facing to ensure maximum exposure, with vertical shoot positioning throughout. Yield management is actively managed throughout the growing season to ensure optimal vine/fruit physiological ripeness. This intensive yield management starts at bud-burst and continues through to harvest.

Little Beauty also benefits from climatic monitoring equipment, laid out across the vineyard, collecting real-time climatic events and variables, which is the first of its kind in New Zealand. This infrastructure examines temperature, wind speed and direction, rainfall, evapo-transpiration, dew point and soil moisture. This information is then used for day-to-day management and mitigating strategies to minimise the effects of adverse weather conditions.

The vineyard is Sustainably Accredited under New Zealand Winegrowers-approved programme, and in terms of winemaking, whites are cool-fermented in stainless steel, aromatics are predominately free-run juice, and Pinot Noir benefit from being barrel-aged, in French oak (small percentage of new oak, through to four-years-old).

Wines in the Little Beauty range include 2008 Limited Edition Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which offers a global allocation of 4,000 cases only, Pinot Noir, Dry Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, all of which are limited in volume but highly sought after.
