Petition asks Conservatives to reveal Lord Ashcroft's tax status

A petition has been started to urge the Conservative Party to make the tax status of its deputy chairman, Lord Ashcroft, public.

The initiative began after David Cameron, the Conservative Party leader, said that under a Conservative government any petition with 100,000 signatures would be eligible for formal debate in Parliament.

“Mr Cameron has given us his definition of what is significant as far as petitions go, so it’s only right that we rise to the challenge,” said petition organiser, Dan Sumners. “All we want to know is the truth about this man who not only bankrolls the Tories but is part of the legislative machinery of a country in which he may not even pay tax.”

When he was made a peer in 2000 Lord Ashcroft undertook to become resident in the UK for tax purposes. Ten years later, both he and the Party refuse to confirm that, with the Information Commissioner criticising Mr Cameron and other senior Conservatives for being “evasive” on the issue.
