Roll out your Barrel on Boxing Day

If the Christmas celebrations are likely to leave you feeling lazy and lethargic, join the annual barrel rolling competition at The Valiant Trooper pub in the village of Aldbury, near Tring.  An age-old tradition, barrel rolling is festive fun for all the family.  So, whether you are 8 or 80, instead of switching on those Christmas TV re-runs, go down to The Valiant Trooper for seasonal activity with a difference.

The contest commences at 12.30pm on Boxing Day from the doors of The Valiant Trooper pub.  In teams of 2, roll your barrel up Trooper Road to the heart of the village, roll around the village duck pond and back to the pub for a much needed free pint of Trooper Ale (soft drink and sweets for the children!).

Core Facts

  1. In true Christmas spirit, the barrel rolling is a charitable event and team entry will be charged at £2 per adult and £1 a child. The charity of choice this year is the Help for Heroes.

  2. To continue the Boxing Day festivities, why not take part in another longstanding village tradition, the annual Boxing Day tug of war between The Valiant Trooper and Greyhound pubs. Enter a team of 7 people - there will be a kids’ tug of war followed by adults, and the winning team will receive a free drink from the honorary “Tug of War” cup at the winning pub.

  3. Celebrate your win, or commiserate your loss, with a festive drink and lunch from the new menu at The Valiant Trooper pub in the heart of Aldbury!
