GROUP A designed a private residence with a garden in Bussum, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The design for the villa is both modern and sculptural. Its shape evolved from a simple rectangular volume, with a rotated pitched roof. Subsequently, segments were cut from this volume in order to create windows, terraces, balconies and entrances. By using these slanting walls and roofs the villa and the garden become a unity. Also, the villas sculptural feel ensures that it fits in with the surrounding 19th century villas.
The front and back garden are linked by a sloping path which doubles as a covered parking. The villa cantilevers over this path, and appears to be floating on air.

GROUP A is an international studio for architecture, interior and urban design. The office, founded in 1996, is led by Adam Visser, Folkert van Hagen and Maarten van Bremen, and employs 23 designers and 6 support staff.
Our office has a flat organisational structure that stimulates all employees to contribute their specific talents, know-how and experience, in order to continually improve the qualities of the office as a whole as well as each individual design.
Our inspiring, light and airy open plan office reflects the way we work. Our approach is one of optimism combined with a willingness to investigate; in each successive design stage workshops, research, seminars and discussions go hand in hand with the production and execution of drawings, renderings and presentations. The open studio environment encourages involvement and creates a synergy of motivation and responsibility.
Our portfolio comprises a broad range of projects, certainly in terms of content. In the past thirteen years we have worked on offices and theatres, industrial buildings and housing projects, redevelopments and museums. Also, we work on projects of differing scale, comprising concept studies, strategies and urban plans, architecture, interiors and tailor-made product designs. We are convinced of the need to treat interior design, architecture and surrounding urban landscape as mutually interactive parts of any design solution.
The architectural profession is not limited to design alone; our broad approach not only encompasses projects of differing scale and content, but also building technology, management and cost control.
This means we pursue to take responsibilty for the entire design and building process. The connection between design, technique and management means that the architect is continuously involved. In our opinion this is necessary in order to ensure quality of each individual building as well as the broader built environment.
